Math Union Presents: Dr. Kumar Murty on Number Theory

The Math Union will be hosting our first talk in this year’s series on Monday, September 26th from 4-6pm in BA1220! Professor Kumar Murty, the chair of the University of Toronto Math Department, will be talking about number theory and cryptography in an accessible talk aimed at undergraduates. If you’re interested in number theory, cryptography, a great lecturer, and/or free refreshments, come and see Dr. Murty’s talk!

Call for Officers

ATTENTION EVERYONE!

The Math Union is looking for students to fill officer positions. If you are interested in getting involved with the organizational side of the Math Union, please submit an application through this form. We are looking for 2-3 officers in each of the following positions. Submissions will close September 30th at 11:59 pm.

-Communications Officers: should be students who are interested in exploring ways the Math Union can better connect with students — they should be comfortable composing a well-crafted email and making effective posts on social media. Although not a requirement, any experience in web design or WordPress is also an asset.

-Academic Officers: As an academic officer, you will participate in the planning of academic talks and other academic events which may include room booking, contacting professors, and assisting with the purchase and distribution of refreshments during events. Skills required are reliability, good communication skills, and knowledge of good food places.

-Social Officers: We’re looking for individuals who are motivated, adventurous, creative… and above all, interested in event planning.
Types of events including: Semi-formals, fundraisers, career development workshops, inter-disciplinary panels and etc. Previous experience is not necessary. Include any relevant skills or experience (such as photography, musical talents) in application. A very flexible 1-2 hr /week, on average.

-Designers: Our designer would like some help creating all our beautiful posters and banners. Experience isn’t necessary, but Adobe Illustrator is a huge plus!

Putnam Announcement

A message from the department:

Are you interested in math competitions? Do you like free pizza?

The Putnam is a math competition for university students in Canada and the US. We have training/practice sessions open to everyone. We will be having an information session with free pizza on September 22, 5-7pm at LM159. http://uoft.me/putnam2016

If you plan to attend, please register at http://uoft.me/putnam-register so we know how much pizza to order.

As part of the info session, we will have a practice test that we will use to invite some students to more advanced sessions.

Come find out more!

Math Union Book Sale

The Math Union will be holding its book sale some time in the first week of classes. Fantastic deals guaranteed on all kinds of books, from STEM textbooks to scifi novels. For a small preview, here’s what we’ll have in stock.
See if there’s anything you’re interested in here.

Outreach Opportunity

A message on behalf of the department:

Good Day,
We are seeking a few volunteers to help with an event on June 10th from 3:30 – 9:00. The event is a panel discussion with Dr. Manjul Bhargava and it takes place at Hart House here on campus.

We are essentially looking for people to help with set up and take down of the event (including moving some banners and signs), helping with the registration desk, etc.

You don’t need to stay for the entire event (although we will need a few people to stay until 9:00) and you are invited to listen to the discussion as well (it is quite an impressive panel of speakers from academia, industry and government and will focus on mathematics). Refreshments are also available.

If you are interested and available please let Pamela Brittain (outreach@math.toronto.edu) know and they she will put you in touch with the head organizers.

CUMC Delegate Application

Are you interested in representing the University of Toronto this summer at the Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference taking place July 13th-17th in Victoria, BC?

The Math Union will be funding a delegation to this year’s conference. Delegates will be required to present a 20 minute talk on a mathematical topic. If you are interested in applying for a spot, please send a writeup of your intended talk (approximately 3 pages) and a short cover letter containing your subject POSt, year of study, utoronto email, name and phone number to the math union email: mu@math.utoronto.ca (please submit documents in PDF form only).

Interested students should also fill out the CUMC Funding Release Form and submit it along with a copy of their transcript (a printout from acorn is okay) to Sonya at the main office (BA6290).

The application deadline is 11:59pm on Friday, May 20th.

For information about the CUMC, visit http://cumc.math.ca/2016/.

Call for Applications: CUMC Award for Excellence

The next Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (CUMC) will be hosted by the University of Victoria in Victoria from July 13-17. The Canadian Mathematical Society’s Student Committee (CMS Studc) is inviting undergraduate math students to apply for the CUMC Award for Excellence.

This award is valued at $500 and is given to an outstanding student for the purpose of participating in CUMC. You can find more information here.

The application deadline is March 31st. Applications should be sent to Aaron Berk and Muhammad Khan (chair-studc@cms.math.ca).

MUGS 3: Gotta Catch ‘em All! with Prof. Dror Bar-Natan

Join us this Thursday on Oct 22nd, 2015 at Medical Science Building Room 2173 from 4-6PM for the Math Union’s third instalment: The 17 Tiling Patterns – Gotta Catch ‘em All with Professor Dror Bar-Natan. He is going to uncover all kinds the patterns for plane tiling in mathematical terms and essentially get you obsessed with the game of finding these patterns in everyday life. For those who are interested in symmetries, geometries, and their connections to group theory and topology or simply need new inspirations on tiling designs, do not miss out this excellent opportunity!

Refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you there.
